<image:caption>The photo is a Hubble Space telescope image of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. Hubble photographed the comet on 21 July 21 2025, when the comet was 365 million kilometers from Earth. Hubble shows that the comet has a teardrop-shaped cocoon of dust coming off its solid, icy nucleus. Because Hubble was tracking the comet moving along a hyperbolic trajectory, the stationary background stars are streaked in the exposure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jeffrey Owen Katz, Ph.D. was a recognized child prodigy in electronics engineering. He is best known for the development of innovative AI (artificial intelligence) tools, as well as for his pivotal contribution to the field of factor analysis. While a graduate student at Stony Brook University, Jeff published a new method of factor rotation, contributed to the Numerical Taxonomy Systems Package, and published a number of papers in refereed journals. He was later invited to the University of Lancaster in England, where he applied mathematics and psychometrics to the study of psychophysiology and genetics via sophisticated instrumentation which he designed and built. After receiving his doctorate from Lancaster, Jeff worked at New York University’s Brain Research Lab developing neurometric systems to map brain activity. In 1989, he founded Scientific Consultant Services to provide advanced solutions to difficult data handling problems in diverse fields, with an emphasis on the application of AI to trading the financial markets. He served as Managing Principal, and Director of Trading and System Development of Blackhorn Asset Management, LLC. In 2018, Jeff co-founded, and became Vice President and Chief Science Officer of Sanguis Corporation, established to develop innovative, non-invasive technology for the measurement of such biochemical analytes as glucose and to contribute to the field of Raman spectroscopy, areas in which he holds patents. Together with co-author and wife, Donna L. McCormick, he has written several books for McGraw-Hill (including the classic, The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies), has contributed to anthologies, and has published dozens of articles in trade magazines. Jeff served on the Board of Directors of the Custer Institute and Observatory for 10 years where, as Observatory and Research Director, he obtained a grant from the Fund for Astrophysical Research to support the Education Through Research program that he established for interns and for which he received a New York State Assembly Proclamation. Since his teens, Jeff has been an amateur radio operator (AC2BQ). He has been a member of Hamptons Observatory’s Advisory Board since 2016.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fred W. Thiele Jr. (born August 8, 1953) is a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor. He graduated Albany Law School in 1979, was admitted to the New York Bar in 1980 and then served as counsel to the then-Assemblyman John Behan of Montauk. From 1982-1987, Fred was Southampton Town Attorney and was involved in the implementation of open space and environmental zoning and land preservation programs. In November 1987, he was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature where he enacted legislation that nominated Peconic Bay and Gardiner’s Bay for the National Estuary Program. In November 1991, Fred was elected Southampton Town Supervisor. He enacted a number of important initiatives including open space preservation, affordable housing, environmental protection, comprehensive long-term planning, economic development and government reform. From 1995 to 2012, he was elected to the New York State Assembly for District 2, and from 2013 until his retirement in 2024, he served District 1. As an Assemblyman, Fred authored groundbreaking legislation which created the Peconic Bay Community Preservation Fund Act (CPF). He also was pivotal in other environmental initiatives, including State funds for improving water quality, Peconic Bay and South Shore Estuary projects, farmland preservation, and State acquisition of critical environmental parcels. He is a lifelong amateur astronomer and had even considered a career in science; as he put it “I had a telescope and a weather station. I liked math and numbers. But in my senior year of high school I took calculus. That’s when I said ‘I think political science is my science.” Fred helped establish Hamptons Observatory and, over the years, has been a staunch supporter of its work. Fred states: “I am pleased to serve as an advisor to the Hamptons Observatory. Since my childhood, I have been an amateur astronomer and have owned a telescope for more than 60 years. It is a passion I now have more time to enjoy with retirement. I look forward to working with Hamptons Observatory to bring the wonders of the cosmos to as many East End residents as possible.”</image:caption>
