Virtual Astronomy Lecture:
“Apollo-Soyuz: The Mission & the Astronauts” (A Free, Virtual Lecture)
SPEAKER: Andy Poniros, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador
CO-HOST: Suffolk County Community College
Registration is required: https://bit.ly/ApolloLecture
The first international partnership in space wasn’t the International Space Station. It wasn’t even the Shuttle-Mir series of missions. It was the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first international human spaceflight, and the first mission carried out jointly by the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It was considered by many to be the first step towards detente during the Cold War. July 24, 2025 marks its 50th anniversary. This presentation will take you on a journey from Sputnik to the end of the Apollo Program, including audio and video clips of Andy’s personal experiences with the people that made it all possible--Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts, and Mission Control Members.
Andy Poniros has been a NASA volunteer since 1997 and a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador since 2004 . He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and has worked as a Medical Imaging Engineer for 48 years. Andy is certified by NASA to handle lunar samples, is a science correspondent for a local Connecticut radio station, produces astronomy and space mission radio shows and podcasts. He is an amateur astronomer and telescope maker with a passion for educating the public about science and astronomy.
Hamptons Observatory extends its deepest thanks to Andy for generously taking the time to share his expertise and to co-host Suffolk County Community College for their kind collaboration.
